It all started with the Federal Gaming and Raffles Law of 1947, with it initially being about land-based casinos and traditional gambling. At first, this legislation aimed to control casinos on land, but what it was actually doing was laying the groundwork for the industry as we know it today. For decades, gambling in Mexico was largely confined to physical establishments, with strict regulations regarding the operation of casinos and other gambling activities.
Things moved forward in 2004, when the Mexican government decided to make it more suitable for the digital era by allowing its rules to extend to online gambling, so that online operators had to obtain licenses and adhere to regulations. The evolution of iGaming in Mexico didn’t stop there. Just three years after that, the law was expanded once again in 2007, this time to include online sports betting, too.
All these changes have gradually turned Mexico into a big player in the international iGaming scene, only second to Brazil.
