Ontario’s gambling regulator, the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario (AGCO), fined BetMGM Canada C$110,000 for violating the rules on player incentives.
According to AGCO, these violations took place during major industry events in 2024. Specifically, at the National Franchise Show on January 13-14, where BetMGM reps allegedly handed out C$100 in cash to anyone who signed up and deposited at least C$15.
In another case, a marketing affiliate called “Above the Street” was found using banned promotional tactics in March, leading to 377 new player sign-ups and racking up over C$127,000 in commissions. Then, in April, another affiliate, “Maple Leaf Marketing”, used similar methods, generating 94 new accounts and about C$34,000 in commissions.
AGCO chief executive Dr Karin Schnarr said:
“Responsible gambling safeguards and the protection of Ontarians on registered gaming sites are among our key priorities. The AGCO monitors the activities of all registered operators and their third-party suppliers to ensure they are meeting our high standards, and we continue to take strong action to ensure they operate within the public interest.”
BetMGM’s fine proves Ontario’s devotion to responsible gaming practices.
