Michael Dugher, chair of the Betting and Gaming Council (BGC), has been appointed to the board of directors for the Premier League football team Nottingham Forest.

Dugher stepped into the role of BGC chair in April 2024, succeeding Brigid Simmonds.

Previously, he was the CEO of BGC from December 2019 until September 2024, when Grainne Hurst officially assumed the position.

Before joining BGC, Dugher served as CEO of UK Music from May 2017 to February 2020.

His career also includes a significant period in UK politics, where he was the MP for Barnsley East from May 2010 to April 2017.

Dugher was the chief political spokesperson for the prime minister from September 2008 to March 2010 and served as a special advisor to the government chief whip from September 2007 to September 2008.

Dugher joins the Nottingham Forest board, taking over from former chairman Tom Cartledge, who stepped down to focus on managing his family business.

Upon his appointment, Dugher expressed: “As a lifelong Forest fan, being invited to join the board of the greatest football club on the planet is a tremendous honor and privilege.

“With the outstanding support and continued commitment from our owners, this is an exhilarating time for Nottingham Forest—competing once again among the elite of English football.

“I am aware of the club’s significance to the local community as well as to fans nationwide and globally. I hope to leverage my experience to assist the owners and the board in strengthening the club’s foundation.”

Dugher has had previous associations with the club in various capacities, including as a patron and a board member of the Nottingham Forest Community Trust.

Nottingham Forest chairman Nicholas Randall KC remarked: “We are thrilled to welcome Michael to our board of directors. His credentials are exceptional, and he is a dedicated fan of the club.

“His expertise in public affairs, coupled with his local insights and experiences, perfectly complement the existing talents on our board. He joins us at a particularly exciting period both on and off the field, and we eagerly anticipate collaborating with him.”
