The Isle of Man Gambling Supervision Commission (GSC) has appointed long-serving stalwart Mark Rutherford as its permanent CEO.

Rutherford has been chosen to replace former CEO Steve Brennan, who stepped down from his role last year after almost two decades of leading the regulator.

Rutherford, himself a 16-year veteran at the GSC, will now be responsible for ensuring the “integrity, transparency and effectiveness of the Island’s regulatory framework”.

He served as the GSC’s director of policy and legislation from January 2009 until May 2013 before being named deputy CEO of the regulator in June 2013.

The new CEO previously served in the Isle of Man’s income tax division before moving to the GSC.

Upon Brennan’s announcement of his decision to step down, a job vacancy was placed advertising the role, which came with remuneration of between £125,226 and £164,730 per year.

Rutherford said he would launch an “ambitious” reform to strengthen the regulator’s supervisory powers and that greater international cooperation would be top of his agenda.

He remarked: “I am grateful to the GSC board for their confidence in me as CEO.

“I have lived and worked in the Isle of Man in both private and public sectors and my role as a public servant has been dedicated to serving the Isle of Man.

“I am committed to ensuring the effective, transparent and secure regulation of gambling and the production of medicinal cannabis here on the Island.

“Over the last 25 years the Island has built a global reputation as a high-quality regulatory regime for egaming and we have seen the sector grow and diversify.

“I am keen that we support responsible growth in this important sector by licensing quality operators [that] share our values of safety and fairness.”

David Butterworth, GSC acting chair, added: “‘With his extensive experience and clear vision for improvement, Mark is a valuable asset who is committed to strengthening our regulatory approach to meet the Island’s needs and those of the sectors it represents well into the future.”
