According to the National Administrative Department of Statistics (DANE), online betting is one of the economic activities that most contributed to the country’s GDP growth during the second quarter of 2024.
“What is driving the growth the most are artistic and entertainment activities, including online gambling, which are associated with the sports activities we’ve had in recent months, leading to internet betting,” said Piedad Urdinola, director of DANE.
“This year, online games have seen an increase of around 20% in monopoly revenues paid to Coljuegos. This means that, to date, online betting has transferred around $231.3m for the health of Colombians,” said the president of the Colombian gambling board Coljuegos, Marco Emilio Hincapié Hincapié.
Currently, online betting represents 47% of the total national revenue, while localized games (bingos and casinos) hold a 33% share of the industry. These are followed by SuperAstro and Baloto with 13% and 7%, respectively.
“This significant contribution of the gaming sector to the economy is largely due to our advances in regulation, controlling illegality, and the positive growth of internet betting during the Copa America and Euro Cup events,” said the president of the entity. He added, “We are pleased to know that the gaming sector is positively contributing to the economy and the health of the country. If we add all the concepts and types of games, we have already collected more than $581m to date. We hope that by the end of the year, we can exceed our projections and reach over $1bn in revenue,” he said.
