Portugal’s casino sector generated €63.7m in the second quarter of 2024, which represents an increase
of 1.3 per cent compared to the previous quarter, but a reduction of 4.5 per cent compared to the same period in 2023.
From a monthly perspective, gross gaming revenue reached its highest value in the month of May, having generated around €22.1m, followed by the months of June and April with, respectively, a gross revenue of around €21.1m and €20.5m. Slot machine gaming increased by 0.8 per cent to €50m, equating to 78.4 per cent of all quarterly revenue. Traditional gaming tables generated €13.8m came from casino-style and bingo games, which fell by 19.9 per cent with declines for baccarat, blackjack and American roulette.
Despite land-based struggling, the overall picture was much better with the total of €261.8m being an all-time record, the eighth consecutive quarter that the sector has outperformed previous quarters.
Online casino games generated €158.5m of all revenue in the second quarter, marking an improvement of 29.9 per cent from a year earlier. Slots generated the lion’s share of this at 82.3 per cent with French roulette generating a much smaller amount at 6.5 per cent and blackjack at 4.9 per cent.
