Thomas Carvalhaes has announced he is stepping down as Stake’s Brazil country manager having helped secure a licence for the operator in the newly regulated market.

Carvalhaes joined Stake in October 2024, the month it was added to Brazil’s list of approved operators ahead of the market’s launch on 1 January 2025.

Stake was then granted a full licence by the Secretariat of Prizes and Bets (SPA) midway through February.

Before moving to Stake, Carvalhaes spent nearly two years with supplier GR8 Tech as its senior business development manager from February 2023 to October 2024.

Between June 2022 and February 2024, he was the managing director of Brazilian sportsbook VaiDeBob, and prior to that he spent just under two years with Hero Gaming as its regional director for Brazil and Latam.

Carvalhaes initially joined the operator in September 2020 as its Brazil and Latam manager, following a 14-month stint with LeoVegas as its country manager for Brazil and Latam.

Hired on the strength of his vast experience of working for several igaming firms in the region, Carvalhaes was tasked with securing an office and building a team for Stake’s operations in Brazil.

With that now established, Carvalhaes confirmed he is leaving the firm having “accomplished” his mission.

He said: “With a joyful heart and a strong sense of accomplishment, I’m announcing my decision to pursue new professional challenges, concluding my journey at Stake Brazil.

“As the first local team member, I was entrusted with the responsibility of laying the foundation for Stake’s operations in Brazil’s newly regulated market from the ground up – from choosing the best office location to building a high-performing team and establishing the groundwork for a strong and sustainable local presence.

“One of the proudest moments of my career was playing a vital role in securing the Brazilian gaming licence for Stake Brazil.

“This was a major victory, as all of us Brazilian igaming professionals worked truly hard to evolve the Brazilian market into a fully regulated one

“Working closely with leadership and legal teams, I hand-picked and assembled a top-tier local team, across legal, compliance and operations, crucial to successfully navigating Brazil’s complex licensing process.

“I now leave the business in very good hands to thrive even greater heights, and I do wish them the best of success in the Brazilian market.”
