In the second quarter of 2024, Svenska Spel achieved a share of 93.2 per cent healthy revenues, which is an increase compared to the previous quarter (92.2 per cent).
This relates to revenue from customers who gamble responsibly and with a low risk of gambling problems.
“Our goal is to increase the share of healthy revenues through upcoming measures that strengthen consumer protection around our games,” said Anna Johnson, President and CEO of Svenska Spel. “In the second quarter, our net gaming revenues amounted to SEK 1.87bn. 93 per cent of these come from customers who play with a low risk with us. We want to minimize revenue from customers who gamble in a way that can lead to problems. That’s why we work purposefully to ensure that our customers keep track and don’t gamble for more than they can afford.”
The calculation of the proportion of healthy revenues is based on risk models in Svenska Spel’s analysis tool Playscan. These have been developed in collaboration with Sustainable Interaction, which is an independent specialist in responsible gaming. In Playscan, customers are categorised based on an analysis of their gambling habits and an assessment of the risk each customer runs of developing gambling problems. Revenues from customers who have a low risk of developing gambling problems are defined as healthy.
“The goal is to detect in time when gambling goes from being controlled to becoming more risky so that we can prevent it from developing into problem gambling. If we see signs that a customer is starting to gamble risky, we act in several steps, from notifications to direct personal contact. Ultimately, we impose gaming restrictions or block customers completely from our games,” added Mikael Franzén, Head of Responsible Gaming at Svenska Spel.
All serious gambling companies work to protect their customers and limit the number of people who get into trouble. In order to increase transparency in the gaming industry, Svenska Spel believes that it is important to report the proportion of healthy revenues, which is seen as a central part of the work on responsible gaming.
“As we have strengthened our responsible gaming measures, the proportion of healthy revenues has continuously increased during the year. I hope that more gaming companies with a license in Sweden will start to reliably report this key figure,” added Ms Johnson.
During the autumn, Svenska Spel plans to introduce a number of new measures that will further strengthen consumer protection around the games. This is expected to have a positive effect on the share of healthy revenues.
